Giants safety Will Hill was suspended the first six games of the regular season for violating the NFL's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, the league said in a statement posted on the Giants' official website on Friday.

The 24-year-old Hill will be eligible to return to the Giants' active roster following their Sunday night game against the Eagles on Oct. 12. He can participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

Hill appealed after failing his third drug test since joining the Giants in 2012, but lost. He was suspended four games in 2012 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, which he claimed was Adderall, and another four games last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, which he admitted was for marijuana.

Hill will likely not be welcomed back by the team once his most recent suspension is complete, according to Newsday's Tom Rock.

Writes Conor Orr of The Star-Ledger: "Privately, members of the team's front office are upset at Hill's failure to stay clean, though they were well aware of the risks when they signed him."

The Giants drafted safety Nat Berhe out of San Diego State in the fifth round of the draft.
