The Orioles put starter Miguel Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique on Friday, the team announced before its game against the A's at Camden Yards.

The move is retroactive to May 31, meaning Gonzalez could be available as soon as next Sunday. He was scheduled to start on Saturday against Oakland.

"He's improved, but the problem is he hasn't picked up a ball," said manager Buck Showalter about Gonzalez. "We can't take the chance of him going out there and then in the first inning having a problem with it."

Gonzalez, 30, is 3-4 with a 4.17 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts) this season. He felt discomfort in his right side after his last outing, a loss in Houston on May 30, when he allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

He'll likely make a rehab start before returning to the Orioles.

Kevin Gausman was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to replace Gonzalez on the 25-man roster.
