Tonalist wins 2014 Belmont Stakes, denies California Chrome the Triple Crown

Tonalist won the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, denying California Chrome the Triple Crown.

Chrome, which was a 4-5 favorite, finished in a fourth-place tie with Wicked Strong. Chrome was bidding to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978 and the 12th ever.

Tonalist, which started from the outermost gate (No. 11), won in a time of 2:28.52.

Commissioner was second, losing by a nose, and Medal Count finished third.
