Orioles catcher Matt Wieters to undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday

After much speculation, Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will undergo Tommy John Surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday afternoon, the team announced Monday evening.

The news, which was announced the same day as his scheduled meeting with renowned sports orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, effectively ends his season -- and perhaps some of his spring training for next year -- as recovery time is expected to be approximately nine months. Confirmation from the Orioles comes just roughly a week after reports began to surface the 28-year-old two-time All-Star was likely going the surgery route.

Wieters has been on the disabled list since May because of a right elbow strain. He was eligible to come off the DL on May 26 but his rehab has clearly not gone as planned. Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundle have been handling catching duties for the Orioles in Wieters' absence.

Prior to being sidelined, he was projected to put up career numbers with averages of .308/.339/.500, five home runs and 18 RBI in 112 plate appearances.

The Orioles are 35-33 -- second in the AL East -- heading into Monday night's series opener in Tampa Bay vs. the Rays.
