Rafael Marquez has been one of the most consistent performers for Barcelona since joining the club in 2003, and his steady displays and loyalty have earned him a bumper contract extension that is likely to see the 29-year-old finish his career at the Camp Nou.

The club recently said it will be looking to secure the future of its key players over the new few weeks, with the likes of Victor Valdes and Samuel Eto'o also due to enter negotiations regarding their future.

Marquez, whose current contract is due to expire in 2010, has became part of Barcelona's first choice back line and, along with Carles Puyol, has been key to its excellent defensive record, which has seen it concede just 10 league goals all season.

Barcelona is currently riding high at the summit of the Primera Division and is 11 points clear of its nearest rival, Sevilla.
