Argentinos Juniors came into their Round 9 Apertura Championship clash with league leaders Lanus, bottom of the 20-team league. But they lifted their game for the occasion and claimed a valuable victory, 2-1.

The side from La Paternal tried to take the league leaders by surprise, and they managed to do this, as Ignacio Canuto put them ahead in the 10th minute.

Lanus, who had won 6 of their 8 league matches prior to the game, came more into the match as the half progressed, and it seemed that at any moment they would draw level.

Right before half-time Diego Lagos scored their equaliser with a powerful half-volley that ended up in the angle of Sebastian Torrico's left post.

But Argentinos commenced the second half much like in the first, and three minutes in Gabriel Hauche put them ahead for the second time.

For the majority of the half Lanus searched for a goal, but although they created a number of clear-cut opportunities they couldn't beat Torrico for a second time.

The match was played at an intense pace, and tackles went flying in from all directions.

In the final five minutes, Lanus piled intense pressure on the Argentinos goal, but they ended up running out of time.

The defeat means either Colon de Santa Fe or Velez Sarsfield can overtake Lanus at the top of the league standings if they win their matches on the weekend. -- Goal.com
