El Salvador calls Quakes' Alvarez vs. U.S.
Former U.S. U-20 Arturo Alvarez was among three MLS players called into El Salvador's 22-player squad for its World Cup 2010 qualifier against the U.S. on Sept. 5 in Sandy, Utah.
Alvarez, who was born in Houston to Salvadoran parents, qualifies to play for El Salvador under FIFA's new rules relaxing the restrictions on players switching their allegiance.
Also called up was San Jose Earthquakes teammate Ramon Sanchez and first-year New York Red Bulls defender Alfredo Pacheco.
Other foreign-based players are former D.C. United player Eliseo Quintanilla, who plays for Ermis Aradippou in Cyprus, and Rodolfo Zelaya of Mexico's Leon.
