Dempsey helps Fulham advance in Europa League

Fulham needed a win over Swiss club FC Basel to advance to the 32-team knockout stage of the Europa League and got it thanks to a 77th-minute goal by Zolton Gera that late sub Clint Dempsey helped set up.

Dempsey entered the game in the 70th minute with Fulham ahead 2-1. The American attacker delivered a pass that sent Stephen Kelly down the left. Kelly pulled the ball back for Gera to finish. The goal proved decisive as Basel's Marco Strellar scored with three minutes left, making the final score 3-2.

Fulham finished second in Group E, two points behind first-place Roma and two ahead of third-place Basel. --Soccer America
