Mexican first division soccer club Atlante are moving their base to the famous Caribbean beach resort of Cancun for next season.

The move was confirmed on Monday by the government of the southern state of Quintana Roo, in which Cancun is situated, and the directors of the Grupo Pegasus, which owns the club, at a media conference.

Atlante, currently based in Mexico City, have suffered for years from poor attendances, rarely managing to even half fill the 115,000 capacity Azteca stadium which they share with the more popular America.

The 2006/07 season is due to start in July or August.

Mexican clubs are treated as franchises and are allowed to move cities.
