Mexico reportedly to play Italy on June 3

According to Italian news agency ANSA, Mexico and Italy will play a friendly in Brussels, Belgium, on June 3.

The report, however, conflicts with Mexico's original plan of leaving Europe to South Africa no later than May 31.

Still, Mexico federation officials have not confirmed any friendly matches leading up to the World Cup. Other federations have confirmed games against Mexico on Feb. 24 (Bolivia), March 3 (New Zealand) and May 16 (Chile), while a match against the Netherlands on May 26 has also been widely reported.

Mexico and Italy last met at the World Cup eight years ago, when Jared Borgetti gave El Tri a 1-0 lead before Alessandro Del Piero equalized late, a result that sent both sides through to the second round of Japan/Korea 2002.

Eight years earlier, Daniele Massaro and Marcelino Bernal exchanged goals in a 1-1 draw in New York. --Goal.com
