Earthquakes add Brazilian attacker Eduardo

A day before meeting Kansas City in its first competitive action of the preseason, the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday announced the signing of forward Eduardo Adelino da Silva.

The 30-year-old had been training with San Jose since preseason began in late January. He accompanied the team to Phoenix and played in a 3-0 loss to the Wizards on Wednesday.

"Eduardo will bring a lot to our club," said general manager John Doyle of the 6-foot-1, 175-pound attacker who has played club ball in Switzerland, Belgium and France as well as his native country. "He is a physical presence up top with the ability to hold the ball, and he also has great feet. He has proven that he can score goals in quality leagues around the world and we think that he will have success in MLS also."

With FC Basel, Eduardo scored 17 goals in 96 games and helped it win the Swiss league championship in 2005 and 2008 and Swiss Cup titles in 2007 and 2008 prior to the club releasing him last June.

A native of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo started his professional career in 1999 with Vasco de Gama before moving to Europe and Belgian club Charleroi, with which he scored 24 goals in 84 games and earned a transfer to French club Toulouse, which he helped gain promotion to Ligue 1.

He has played on the left side of midfield and as a forward for most of his pro career. Salary and contract terms were not disclosed.

Eduardo will be added to the Quakes' roster once MLS receives his international transfer certificate. He played in the first two of four 30-minute sessions against Kansas City and is expected to see more action when the teams play again Saturday.
