D.C. United signs 43-year-old goalkeeper Pat Onstad

WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. United have signed 43-year-old goalkeeper Pat Onstad to a short-term playing contract and placed goalkeeper Steve Cronin on the disabled list.

Onstad retired at the end of last season and was hired by United as an assistant coach. But injuries to Cronin (broken wrist) and Bill Hamid (shoulder surgery) left the club short-handed in net, and Onstad began practicing in mid-February to prepare to play during the early part of the season.
