NEW YORK (AP) -- Chicago Fire defender Wells Thompson was suspended for a game and fined an undisclosed amount Thursday for his reckless challenge on Columbus' Agustin Viana in a game April 20.

Thompson was shown a yellow card for his dangerous slide tackle. Viana had clear possession of the ball when Thompson went hurtling into him with both feet, knocking Viana to the ground in the 12th minute of their game.
