MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Manchester United says the club has agreed to sign defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan team Atletico Penarol.

The 20-year-old Varela, who was on trial at United during the final weeks of last season, will be David Moyes' first signing as manager of the English champions. No financial details were disclosed.

United says the fullback will join up with the Uruguay under-20 squad for the upcoming world championship in Turkey.
