NEW YORK (AP) -- Former Spanish national team midfielder Marcos Senna has signed with the New York Cosmos, who start play in August in the second-tier North American Soccer League.

Senna turns 37 next month and was born in Brazil. He made 28 appearances from Spain from 2006-10 and was a member of the all-tournament team when his country won the 2008 European Championship.

Senna spent the last 11 seasons with Villarreal. The Spanish club was relegated to the second division after the 2011-12 season and gained promotion back to La Liga for 2013-14.

The Cosmos said Thursday he must pass a physical for the deal to be completed.
