BERLIN (AP) - Borussia Dortmund needed extra time to grind out a 2-0 win at second-division 1860 Munich in the second round of the German Cup on Tuesday.
Dortmund made the breakthrough in the 105th minute with a penalty from substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Marco Reus was fouled by 1860 midfielder Dominik Stahl, who was sent off, and Aubameyang sent goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly the wrong way.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealed the victory in the 107th when he rounded the goalkeeper, cut inside a defender and slotted to the empty net, after a fine run and cross from Jonas Hofmann.
"120 minutes - we'd like to have avoided that,'' said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp with his eye on upcoming Bundesliga and Champions League games. "We wanted to progress, did that. All good."
Dortmund made hard work of its chances, striking the post or crossbar four times - twice in extra-time.
Altogether, the visitors dominated possession, with 40 shots on goal compared to 1860's two, 18 corners compared to the home side's one, and 14 crosses versus three.
"Dortmund are deservedly a round further, there's absolutely no quibbling about that,'' said 1860 coach Friedhelm Funkel.
Elsewhere, Wolfsburg defeated second-division Aalen 2-0 at home, Augsburg won 3-0 at third-division Preussen Muenster, and second-division SV Sandhausen eliminated the lowest-ranked remaining side by winning 3-1 at fourth-tier Wiedenbrueck.
Bayer Leverkusen won 2-0 at third-division Arminia Bielefeld, thanks to second-half goals from Son Heung-min and Sidney Sam.
Second-division Cologne provided the only surprise of the night with a 1-0 win at Mainz, with former player Marcel Risse scoring for the visitors.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored for Hamburger SV to beat second-division Greuther Fuerth 1-0 at home, and Hoffenheim needed extra-time to defeat second-division Energie Cottbus 3-0. The 18-year-old Niklas Suele opened the scoring, before Roberto Firmino and Sven Schipplock settled it for the home side.
Defending champion Bayern Munich hosts Bundesliga rival Hannover on Wednesday.
