LONDON (AP) - Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has been hired by Fulham to help under-pressure manager Martin Jol keep the struggling London club in the English Premier League.
Fulham says Meulensteen will take over as head coach with immediate effect to work alongside Jol, six months after leaving United in the aftermath of Alex Ferguson's retirement as manager.
Since then, the Dutchman spent 16 days in charge of Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala before being fired.
The pressure has intensified on Jol in recent weeks after comprehensive defeats to Manchester United and Liverpool left the team in the league's bottom three.
Meulensteen says ''I've spent many hours talking with Martin Jol and we share a vision of how football should be played and how players should be developed.''
