Jimmy Nielsen retires after leading Sporting KC to MLS Cup

Jimmy Nielsen spent the last four years of his career in Kansas City, winning an MLS Cup, U.S. Open Cup, and the 2012 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Sporting Kansas City captain Jimmy Nielsen is retiring, two days after making a pair of saves during penalty kicks against Real Salt Lake to help his team win its first Major League Soccer's championship since 2000.

The 36-year-old Nielsen, MLS's goalkeeper of the year in 2012, spent four years with Kansas City after playing in England for Millwall (1994-95) and Leicester (2007-08), and in Denmark for AaB Aalborg (1995-07) and Vejl (2008-10).

He set Kansas City's team goalkeeping records for games (128), wins (57) and shutouts (45).
