English defender John Terry, left, has retired from international play, and England manager Roy Hodgson, right, says he has no intentions of trying to call him back in.

LONDON (AP) — England coach Roy Hodgson has ruled out trying to persuade John Terry to return to international football for the World Cup despite strong performances for Chelsea.

The 33-year-old center back quit England duty in 2012 before being found guilty by the Football Association of racially abusing an opponent while playing for Chelsea.

Hodgson is not willing to risk antagonizing the squad by asking the former captain to reverse his international retirement for the World Cup, having not featured in qualifying for Brazil.

Hodgson said on Wednesday: "We've got along without him for the whole of the qualification, and quite a few friendly matches, and we'll have to get along without him in the future. As far as I'm concerned retirement is retirement."

Hodgson insisted that it's time "we move on."
