BERLIN (AP) - Nuremberg eked out a 1-0 win at Augsburg to climb out of the Bundesliga's relegation zone on Sunday.

Swiss striker Josip Drmic's headed goal in the 64th minute was enough to end Augsburg's eight-game run without a defeat.

''Nuremberg made life very difficult for us and played very effectively,'' said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl, whose team slipped to ninth. ''A point would have been fair, however.''

Nuremberg had more ball possession in the first half though Augsburg looked more likely to score.

The visitors took the lead when Adam Hlousek crossed for Drmic to claim his 11th goal of the season.

Augsburg pressed for an equalizer but was foiled by wayward shooting, breakdowns in combination play and stubborn defending.

Nuremberg goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer produced a flying save to deny Erik Thommy from a free kick in the 89th.

Nuremberg climbed to 14th in the 18-team league with its third win from four games since the winter break.

Nuremberg coach Gertjan Verbeek grumbled about his side hanging on for the victory.

''We mustn't forget to play football,'' the Dutchman said. ''We fought like never before and that's why we got the three points. If we continue like this I believe we'll avoid relegation. We only depend on ourselves.''

Hertha Berlin hosts Wolfsburg later Sunday.
