FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Germany's Borussia Monchengladbach has signed American defender/winger Fabian Johnson from Bundesliga rival Hoffenheim starting with the 2014-15 season.

Monchengladbach said Monday that Johnson has received a four-year contract. Monchengladbach sports director Max Eberl calls Johnson a ''very interesting player ... who can play on both flanks as a defender or attacker.''

Johnson was part of the Germany team that won the 2009 European Under-21 Championship. He switched to the U.S. national team program in 2011 and has made 18 appearances for the American senior national team.

The 26-year-old has appeared in 91 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim. He will be the first U.S. international to play at Monchengladbach since Michael Bradley, who was there from 2008-2012.
