MEXICO CITY (AP) - Isaac Brizuela scored a last-minute goal to give Toluca a 1-0 win over Chivas on Sunday to help the club retain second place in Mexico's first division after the eighth round, three points behind undefeated Cruz Azul.
Cruz Azul downed Queretaro 3-1 on Friday, while Pumas defeated America 3-1 on Saturday in the Mexico City derby to improve to third in the standings.
In other weekend results, Chiapas overcame Club Tijuana 3-0, Tigres won 1-0 against Veracruz, Pachuca defeated Morelia 3-0, Leon secured a 4-2 win over Santos Laguna, Monterrey got a 1-0 victory against Atlas and Atlante drew 1-1 with Puebla.
Brizuela found space on the edge of the penalty box and launched a low shot that went in off the post to win the points for Toluca in a game that didn't produce many clear scoring opportunities.
Cruz Azul came from behind against Morelia, which took the lead through Ricardo Da Silva in the 26th minute. Rogelio Chavez equalized in the 37th from the penalty spot, with Mauro Formica giving Cruz Azul the lead two minutes before halftime.
Chavez added his second with a shot from 40 yards one minute from the end.
Second half goals from Daniel Luduena and Roberto Ramirez secured the win for Pumas, which had a numerical advantage after Francisco Rodriguez was sent off for America in the 50th minute.
Luduena put Pumas ahead in the 8th, with Raul Jimenez equalizing in the 26th.
