Toluca withstands gritty Earthquakes, advances on PKs in CCL

San Jose put forth a gritty performance but lost on penalty kicks to Liga MX side Toluca.

TOLUCA, Mexico (AP) - Toluca beat the San Jose Earthquakes on penalties to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals for the second time Wednesday.

With the scores level at 1-1 after extra time, San Jose's Shea Salinas missed a vital penalty to allow the Mexican side to advance with a 5-4 win in the shootout.

Ty Harden earlier put the U.S. side ahead in the 56th off a cross from Salinas, before Isaac Brizuela scored the equalizer in the 69th to force the match into extra time.

Toluca, a ten-time Mexican champion, will play next play the winner of the quarterfinals series between Panama*s Arabe Unido and Costa Rica*s Alajuelenese. Toluca also reached the Champions League semifinals in 2010, losing to Pachuca 2-1 on aggregate.
