Argentina takes FIFA rankings top spot from Germany

ZURICH (AP) Argentina passed World Cup champion Germany to take the top spot in the FIFA rankings for the first time in seven years, and the United States dropped to 34th - its lowest since 2012.

Argentina, which lost the World Cup final to Germany, moved up despite losing the Copa America final to Chile.

The United States fell seven spots to its lowest level since it was 36th in July and August 2012. The Americans should move up next month with points accumulated in this month's CONCACAF Gold Cup, the team's first competitive matches since last year's World Cup.

Argentina rose two places, and Chile moved up eight spots to No. 11.

Germany fell to No. 2, followed by Belgium, Colombia and the Netherlands. Newcomers in the top 10 are No. 8 Romania and No. 10 Wales.

Algeria at No. 19 is the only top-20 team from outside Europe and South America. Costa Rica leads CONCACAF teams at No. 21, and Asia's highest-ranked team is No. 38 Iran.
