Tab Ramos' role with U.S. Soccer is growing, with the Under-20 national team coach officially being anointed as the federation's second youth technical director -- that in addition to his U-20 responsibilities -- on Tuesday.

Ramos, a three-time World Cup veteran, succeeds Claudio Reyna, who moved on to become future MLS expansion franchise New York City FC's director of soccer operations. Ramos will "oversee the long-term strategies for development of both coaches and players at the youth level in the United States," according to U.S. Soccer's definition of the role.

U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann has signed off on the appointment, calling Ramos an "ideal" fit for the job in comments made in a U.S. Soccer release. Ramos has accompanied Klinsmann's senior team staff on occasion as he climbs the U.S. Soccer chain.

"Tab is the ideal person to fulfill this very important role," Klinsmann said. "He's been with the senior national team on a regular basis in order to understand our holistic approach and be able to spread the messages through our youth national teams as well the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Bringing Tab on as youth technical director is an important step to continue connecting the dots between all areas of player development, including coaching education, parent education, the college game and our grass roots."

There is little time for Ramos to celebrate his new appointment, as he gets set to guide the U-20 national team in games against Hellas Verona's academy team, the Iran U-20 national team and an opponent to be named during a training camp in Italy (roster available here). In keeping with the theme of former U.S. international greats moving onto positions within the federation, Tony Meola and Clint Mathis are on Ramos' staff for the trip, according to U.S. Soccer.
