De Rosario missed penalty extends Canada's goal drought to 9 games
The USA's neighbor to the north was on the cusp of snapping its horrific stretch of attacking futility in the first half of Friday's friendly against the Czech Republic. Dwayne De Rosario, Canada's captain and all-time leading goal scorer, stood at the penalty spot, set to pull Canada even in the game in the 39th minute and tally the national team's first goal since Marcus Haber's strike in a March 22 friendly against Japan (a span that has included being shut out by the likes of Belarus, Martinique and 152nd-ranked Mauritania TWICE).
Instead, De Rosario, a four-time MLS Cup champion and former league MVP who was not retained by D.C. United and will be an intriguing name in the pool of players available in the MLS Re-Entry Draft, promptly had his spot kick saved by Chelsea No. 1 Petr Cech. The Czech Republic went on to win 2-0, extending Canada's winless streak to 13 games.
Sigh. The drought continues. Here's video of the miss (or save, depending on your vantage point):
