Red Bulls' Tim Cahill ties Australia goals record
Tim Cahill was already an Australia icon. What the New York Red Bulls Designated Player accomplished Tuesday just cemented his place in the record books.
Cahill scored his 29th international goal in Australia's 1-0 friendly victory over fellow World-Cup-bound nation Costa Rica, equaling Damian Mori's national record. Cahill is renowned for his aerial prowess, so it should come as no surprise that his record-tying strike came on a header off a corner kick. And per usual, he turned the corner flag into a punching bag for his celebration before being mobbed by his Socceroo teammates.
Cahill entered the match fresh off a tremendous MLS campaign during which he helped lead the Red Bulls to the Supporters' Shield with 11 goals and five assists and may earn league Best XI honors (and MVP consideration) as well.
