The returns on Gareth Bale's record-setting move to Real Madrid from Tottenham have been decent, though not spectacular, in his first season as a Blanco, but he reminded all why the Spanish power opened the checkbook to make him Cristiano Ronaldo's sidekick on Wednesday with his Champions League golazo against Schalke.
The elusive Bale torched Schalke, dodging multiple defenders with a shifty dribble and slick finish (after Karim Benzema did some heavy lifting to force a turnover and keep the ball in play) to give Real Madrid a 2-0 lead in the 21st minute of their round of 16 first-leg clash in Germany. He added a second in the second half to put Schalke to the sword as part of the 6-1 rout. The goals give Bale four in the Champions League and 14 in all competitions this season, more than halfway to the career-high 26 he scored last season for Tottenham.
An emerging trend to come out of the first legs of this Champions League round has been the road teams seizing complete control of the series in the first leg, and Bale's goal -- and Real Madrid's performance as a whole -- certainly did nothing to stray from that.
