Zenit St. Petersburg can focus on the future of the Andre Villas-Boas era, now that its Champions League run is over, but Hulk -- who will be reunited with Villas-Boas after their time together in Porto -- made sure that the Russian side went out with a highlight.
Brazil international Hulk's opening strike -- and what a strike it was -- gave Zenit a brief lifeline in its 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund Wednesday, one that cemented the club's Champions League elimination on a 5-4 aggregate defeat. With the club entering the day down 4-2 on aggregate, having conceded four road goals, Hulk sparked notions of a comeback with a wondrous long-range blast.
The robust striker fought off one defender, rounded another, had a look and uncorked a left-footed blast from about 35 yards with his momentum taking him to his left, stunning Dortmund and bringing Zenit within 4-3 in the 16th minute. Sebastien Kehl restored the two-goal edge in the 38th minute, and Salomon Rondon's late score was just consolation, as last year's Champions League runner-up progressed to join a stacked quarterfinal field.
Hulk and Zenit won't be there, but they have this incredible goal to hang their hat on. Watch below:
