Jermaine Jones was on his way to making himself available for a Fabian Johnson cutback pass, when the most improbable of defenders made a vital intervention.

Uzbekistan referee Ravshan Irmatov inadvertently hip-checked Jones as he ran to the top of the Germany box midway through the first half of Thursday's vital Group G finale, taking him out of the play and spoiling a potential U.S. chance in the process.

He won't quite go down in the history books as Koman Coulibaly, the Malian referee who disallowed Maurice Edu's apparent winner vs. Slovenia in 2010, or Hugh Dallas, the Scottish referee who failed to call a handball on Germany's Torsten Frings in the 2002 quarterfinals. The least he could done was card himself for preventing the scoring chance, though, right?
