Mexico entered the World Cup facing long odds, but a long shot from Giovani dos Santos had El Tri on the cusp of the quarterfinals. 

A few minutes into the second half, dos Santos unleashed a stunning shot from about 25 yards to put Mexico ahead of the favored Netherlands 1-0. Dos Santos, who had two goals denied by wrong offside calls in Mexico's opener against Cameroon, took down a lofted ball with his chest and then struck a left-footed shot across his body that tucked inside the post. 

Mexico was minutes away from punching its quarterfinal ticket, but Wesley Sneijder's vicious follow-up shot, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's stoppage-time penalty thwarted El Tri's dreams.
