CHENNAI, India (AP) -- American Robby Ginepri stunned top-seeded Robin Soderling in the first round of the Chennai Open on Tuesday, defeating the big-serving Swede 6-4, 7-5.

Ginepri held off a second-set comeback by the French Open finalist to advance to the second round.

"It's tough to say what went wrong, probably everything,'' said Soderling, ranked No. 8.

The 100th-ranked Ginepri had 11 aces and saved seven of eight break points.

"I couldn't have asked for a better start to the season,'' Ginepri said. "I had trained hard in the offseason and it's paying off.''

He added that arriving in India three days before Soderling had helped him "adapt better to the conditions.''

Also Tuesday, third-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland ousted wild card Rohan Bopanna of India 6-1, 6-4. Somdev Devvarman of India upset Rainer Schuettler of Germany 7-5, 6-2.

Michael Russell of the United States defeated Prakash Amritraj 6-3, 6-1, while Marcel Granollers of Spain overcame James Ward of Britain 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
