Mona Barthel was upset in the first round of the Australian Open.

Fifth-seeded Roberta Vinci was bounced out of the Open GDF Suez when she was beaten by Mona Barthel of Germany 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday.

Vinci struggled in the second set, losing two of her service games. Matters worsened for the Italian when Barthel immediately broke serve in the third set.

Ranked 16th, Vinci broke back but the 45th-ranked Barthel broke twice more to take the match.

Second-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic also progressed to the last eight after beating Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Safarova next faces Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the second round.

Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia will face top-seeded Sara Errani of Italy after defeating fellow qualifier Virginie Razzano of France 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
