Seppi upset in second round of Winston-Salem; Fish retires
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- A highly seeded player and another well-known one are headed home early from the Winston-Salem Open.
Italy's Andreas Seppi, the second seed, was upset Tuesday night in the second round after American Mardy Fish retired because of heat stroke.
Seppi, who was No. 23 in the ATP world rankings, was beaten by American qualifier Steve Johnson 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5.
Fish retired in the third set of his match with Jarkko Nieminen. The No. 11 seed from Finland was leading Fish 7-5, 6-7 (3), 3-2.
Fish said in a statement issued by the ATP he developed "heat stroke'' and the "very hot and humid'' weather made it difficult to continue the match.
"The weather just got to me a little bit and I just couldn't go any more,'' Fish said.
The tournament lost two of its top three seeds Monday when top-seeded Tomas Berdych and third-seeded John Isner, the two-time defending champion, withdrew with injuries. Those two met in last year's final.
Fourth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain is the last of the top four seeds remaining.
Robredo, at No. 22 in the ATP rankings, beat France's Guillaume Rufin 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 in the final match of the night.
Slovakia's Martin Klizan, the 14th seed, was upset 6-4, 6-1 by Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round.
Eighth-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina defeated France's Nicolas Mahut 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in the final hard-court tune-up before the U.S. Open.
In other second-round matches, fifth-seeded Benoit Paire of France beat American James Blake 7-6 (9), 2-6, 6-3; seventh-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Germany beat American Tim Symczek 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; ninth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria beat qualifier Thiemo de Bakker 7-5, 6-7 (4), 4-2; and 13th-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia defeated qualifier David Goffin of Germany 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Russia's Alexandr Dolgopolov, the 10th seed, beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, and 15th-seeded Gael Monfils of France defeated Guido Pella of Argentina 6-2, 6-2.
