Fabio Fognini upsets No. 8 Rafael Nadal in third round of U.S. Open
No. 8 seed Rafael Nadal was upset by No. 32 seed Fabio Fognini early Saturday in the third round of the U.S. Open.
Nadal won the first two sets against Fognini 6–3, 6–4 before the Italian stormed back to take the next two 6–4, 6–3 and force a fifth set, which Fognini won 6–4.
This is the first time in 10 years that Nadal has not won a single slam in a given year. Nadal entered Friday 151–0 in Grand Slam matches where he wins the first two sets.
This marked the third time this year that Fognini defeated Nadal. The two faced each other in February at the Rio Open, when Fognini defeated Nadal in the semifinals. Nadal and Fognini met again two months later in the third round of the Barcelona Open, where Fognini once again came out on top.

Last month, Nadal got the best of Fognini in the final of the Hamburg Open with a straight-sets victory.
The Day 5 night session also featured No. 10 Milos Raonic being upset by No. 18 Feliciano Lopez and No. 7 David Ferrer falling to No. 27 Jeremy Chardy. Fognini will next face Lopez in the round of 16.
