On this week's episode of the SI Tennis Beyond the Baseline Podcast, Sports Illustrated executive editor and host Jon Wertheim talks with Dick Vitale.
ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale joins the podcast from Florida to talk about something other than his line of work: tennis. An avid fan, Vitale discusses his current relationship with tennis—how often he watches, his experiences with the sport and more—and how he became connected through his daughters' involvement. Vitale talks about the reasons he loves tennis, the differences between being a commentator for tennis vs. basketball and what it's like being a tennis dad. He also shares stories about his friendship with tennis coach Nick Bollettieri, his experiences attending Wimbledon with his family, the time he met Roger Federer and more.
Also on the podcast, Vitale discusses his passion for helping children in need, specifically through his 11th Annual Dick Vitale Gala, which will be held on May 13 in Sarasota, Fla., to honor coaches across many sports and raise money for cancer research. Net proceeds of Vitale's event will support the V Foundation's continued effort to find cures for pediatric cancer. To date, the Dick Vitale Gala has raised more than $15 million for pediatric cancer research. You can make a donation to the cause here.
