Daily Bagel: McIlroy follows Wozniacki at Australian Open from afar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KyYgak8oIE

The Daily Bagel is your dose of the interesting reporting, writing and quipping from around the Internet.

• Video: Carla Suarez Navarro pulled off the early upset of the tournament Tuesday, knocking out No. 7 Sara Errani, a quarterfinalist last year. She did it with the help of this sick diving volley. Boris Becker would be proud.

• Looks like Rory McIlroy was up at 3 a.m. in Abu Dhabi to watch Caroline Wozniacki's comeback victory over Sabine Lisicki.

• As Steve Tignor writes, the highly anticipated first-round match between Roger Federer and Benoit Paire turned out to be a dud.

In the third set, the Frenchman commenced clown time in earnest—a drop shot overhead was soon followed by a two-handed forehand return, which, inevitably, led to volley hit (and missed) from between the legs. Along the way, Paire may have set the record for the worst challenge of all time, a joke query of a second serve that landed four feet long. It was one of the Frenchman’s eight double faults over the course of a very short match.

• Lots to like in Kimiko Date-Krumm's post-match press conference transcript. The 42-year-old became the oldest player to win a match at the Australian Open, beating No. 12 Nadia Petrova 6-2, 6-0 for her first win in Melbourne since 1996. What's the secret to her success? "Just I eat a lot; I sleep a lot." As for whether she hangs out with the younger players in the locker room:

No, it's like my daughter (laughter). But it's happen. Some people, the player's mother is younger than me. So it's like my daughter.

• Wu Di, ranked No. 186, became the first Chinese man to play in the main draw of a Slam. He lost to Ivan Dodig, but it was an experience of a lifetime.

"I was shocked," Wu, who was mobbed after the match by fans wearing his country's red national flag, told reporters. "In domestic tournaments, it's hard enough getting Chinese to cheer me on, let alone foreigners.

"But there were foreigners here telling me to 'come on!'. That was the first time that's happened, so I felt really happy to have that."

• Sponsor news: Tomas Berdych, no longer with Nike, signed with H&M as his clothing sponsor. ... Victoria Azarenka signs with Red Bull. ... Svetlana Kuznetsova goes from Fila to Chinese brand Qiaodan.

• Tim Smyczek's younger sister, Lauren, is blogging for Tennis Grandstand. You can read her thoughts on what it was like growing up with a tennis pro brother there. Smyczek, who got into the Australian Open main draw as a lucky loser, is into the second round and will play No. 4 David Ferrer.

• The Changeover breaks out the PowerPoint deck to try to determine the king and queen of the bagel set. The answers might surprise you.

• Warning: If you click this link, you can't unsee it. Crocodile Dunblane.

• Non-tennis: Fifteen years after its release, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Gus Van Sant reflect on Good Will Hunting.
