It was a good day to be Angelique Kerber. The German put an end to Madison Keys' run at the Australian Open on Friday, beating the American teen 6-2, 7-5.
To top it off, it just so happened to be Kerber's 25th birthday, and the Aussies being the gracious hosts they are, took the time to serenade her after the match. Rennae Stubbs, working for Australia's Channel 7, presented Kerber and led the crowd at Rod Laver Arena in a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday."
The win puts Kerber into her fourth straight Round of 16 at a Slam, a solid streak for the WTA No. 5, who had never made it past the third round of a major until the 2011 U.S. Open, where she had her breakout run to the semifinals. Since then Kerber's missed out on the fourth round only once, at the Aussie Open last year. She'll face No. 19 Ekaterina Makarova next.
