Lax Approach

Maryland defenseman Max Schmidt (top) joined the celebratory dogpile after the No. 7 Terrapins scored an overtime goal to beat No. 9 Duke 11--10 at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic last Saturday in Baltimore. Junior attackman Grant Catalino scored a career-high five goals, including the game-winner.

Newton Marshall, a 26-year-old from St. Anne, Jamaica, shared high fives (page 36) with onlookers just after the start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Sunday in Willow, Alaska. Marshall, the first competitor from Jamaica in the event's 38-year history, was one of 71 mushers to tackle the Iditarod, which will cover 1,112 miles, ending in Nome.
