Mark Sanchez's shoulder injury "is more significant than the team has to this point allowed" and means the Jets quarterback "could miss several weeks," ESPN's Ed Werder reported Tuesday on SportsCenter.

Sanchez was already expected to miss Week 1. There are reports rookie Geno Smith was going to be New York's starting quarterback regardless of Sanchez's status, but a significant injury gives Smith the spot by default.

Neither quarterback was all that good in the preseason. Many speculated the Jets wanted Smith, their second-round pick out of West Virginia, to win the job, but he didn't make it an easy decision for New York. Smith missed the team's second preseason game with an ankle injury. He started the third game but threw three inceptions and looked overwhelmed.

Sanchez suffered the injury to his throwing shoulder later that game on a hard hit by Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin. Jets coach Rex Ryan's decision to put Sanchez in during the fourth quarter of a preseason game has been widely criticized.
