Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis still collecting millions from school

Former Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis received $2.1 million in compensation from the school in 2012, more than what current coach Brian Kelly or athletic director Jack Swarbrick made, reports USA Today's Steve Berkowitz.

Weis was fired by the school in December 2009 and now is the head coach at Kansas. He will continue to get paid through December 2015, according to terms of his buyout. According to USA Today, Weis made $2.5 million in 2013 at Kansas.

Kelly received more than $600,000 in bonuses during the 2012 calendar year, according to the university's federal tax returns from 2012. Swarbrick made more than $1.1 million, including more than $170,000 in bonuses, and women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw took home almost $1.1 million from the school.

Kelly was listed with nearly $1.5 million in total pay, but the return notes that Kelly "is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University" and any such income is not reported on the return. Kelly's base compensation was reported as $698,140 – a little more than $25,000 more than the amount reported for calendar 2011.

Bob Diaco, the football team's defensive coordinator in 2012, was credited with a total of just over $672,000 – more than $495,000 in base pay and more than $88,000 in bonuses. Diaco left to become Connecticut's head coach after the 2013 season. Notre Dame did not list an assistant coach among its most highly paid employees on any of its past four tax returns.
