Georgetown and Syracuse to renew rivalry

Georgetown and Syracuse will restore their basketball rivalry, playing in a four-year home-and-home series that will begin in 2015, the schools announced Tuesday.

Georgetown will host Syracuse at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., during the 2015-16 season and the Hoyas will make a trip to Syracuse the following season.

The schools ended their rivalry in 2013 when Syracuse became a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Georgetown stayed in the basketball-only Big East. While the two were in the old Big East Conference, Georgetown won seven conference tournament titles, and Syracuse won five.

Syracuse leads the all-time series, 49-41, with the Hoyas winning four of the past seven contests. The teams last played in March 2013, a 58-55 overtime victory by Syracuse in the semifinals of the Big East tournament.

"We're excited to announce the renewal of the Georgetown-Syracuse rivalry," Georgetown University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. "The reestablishment of this series is good for college basketball fans across the country. I know that our program and fans will be excited to have a game against Syracuse on our schedule This is something that both schools have worked very hard to have happen and we're very happy to have this series continue."
