Twins starter Mike Pelfrey had surgery on his throwing elbow by famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday to relieve pressure on his ulnar nerve, according to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The 30-year-old is expected to be out 2-4 months.

Pelfrey has been on the disabled list since May 1 with a strained left groin and initially complained of shoulder discomfort during his rehab appearances. He had Tommy John surgery in May 2012.

The Twins signed the 6-foot-7 righty to a two-year, $11 million contract before this season.

He is 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA in five starts this year.
