SOELDEN, Austria (AP) Bode Miller is sitting out the season-opening men's World Cup giant slalom on Sunday because of a persistent back injury.

U.S. Alpine director Patrick Riml says Miller ''had minor problems during the whole summer. He is doing well so far but it doesn't make sense to take any risks here.''

Riml says Miller is getting treatment on a spinal disk and is expected to join the team again for training in Colorado in November.

Miller, who turned 37 this month, returned last season from a year off to recover from knee surgery. The American standout, who has won 11 medals at major championships and holds two overall World Cup titles, won the traditional first race of the season on the Rettenbach glacier in 2003 and again the next year.
