Richardson wins sprint double at speedskating World Cup

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (AP) Heather Richardson of the United States won a speedskating World Cup sprint double Saturday, taking the 500- and 1,000-meter races at the Thialf oval.

Richardson finished the 500 in 37.82 seconds, beating Nao Kodaira of Japan into second and American teammate Brittany Bowe into third. World Cup leader Lee Sang-hwa finished fifth.

Richardson then returned to take the 1,000 in 1 minute, 14.87 seconds. Bowe was second and Li Qishi of China was third.

Men's World Cup leader Pavel Kulizhnikov won the 500 in 34.93. He edged Artur Was of Poland into second place by just four hundredths of a second. Nico Ihle of Germany was third.

Kulizhnikov fell just short of emulating Richardson's double, finishing second in the 1,000 behind Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands. Ihle took third again.
