FALUN, Sweden (AP) Maxim Vylegzhanin of Russia finally won gold at a major event, beating Olympic champion Dario Cologna in the men's 30-kilometer skiathlon Saturday at the Nordic skiing world championships.

Vylegzhanin, who won three silver medals at the Sochi Olympics and had three runner-up finishes from previous worlds, held off the Swiss star in a sprint to the finish to win in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 25.9 seconds. Cologna, the defending world champion in the event, finished 0.4 seconds back for silver.

Alex Harvey of Canada beat Norway's Didrik Toenseth in a sprint for the bronze, his second medal of the championships after taking silver in the individual sprint.

Norway finished without a medal after taking gold in the three previous cross-country events of the championships.
