MOSCOW (AP) Former European javelin champion and Crimea native Vira Rebryk is set to represent Russia after a deal was reportedly agreed on compensation with Ukraine, according to a Russian report.
Rebryk, who won European gold for Ukraine in 2012, took Russian citizenship last year following Russia's annexation of Crimea. But she was blocked from competing for Russia, including defending her European title in August 2014, without the approval of the Ukrainian athletics federation.
That approval has been granted, after the Russian federation agreed to pay unspecified compensation to its Ukrainian counterpart in return for Rebryk and six other Crimean athletes, Ukrainian federation head Igor Gotsul was quoted as saying by Russian agency Tass.
Rebryk's move could be completed by June, Gotsul said, which would likely allow her to compete in August at the world championships.
