Stanford's David Nolan sets American record in 200 IM

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) David Nolan of Stanford set the American record in the 200-yard individual medley at the Pac-12 Conference swimming championships.

Nolan touched first in 1 minute, 40.07 seconds Thursday night, giving him his fourth conference title in the event. The senior, a two-time NCAA champion, earned his 10th career Pac-12 title. His previous best was 1:41.21.

Nolan broke the mark of 1:40.08 set by Olympian Ryan Lochte at the U.S. winter nationals in November 2007.

He was well ahead of second-place Josh Prenot of California, who clocked 1:41.79.

Nolan set a national record in the event when he was in high school.
