LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) The International Equestrian Federation says it is ''disappointing'' that the United Arab Emirates is challenging its suspension for alleged horse welfare and rules violations.

The FEI suspended the UAE - its 2016 endurance world championship host - after investigating horse deaths and doping in long-distance desert races, and alleged faked results for races which never took place.

Reinstatement depended on signing an agreement to protect horses and comply with rules, the FEI said then.

Instead, the UAE federation appealed the suspension to the FEI tribunal.

FEI secretary general Sabrina Zeender says, ''It is disappointing that an appeal has been lodged ... to go down the legal route rather than seeking ways to solve the issues.''

UAE riders are allowed to compete under the FEI flag in disciplines other than endurance.
