OSLO, Norway (AP) The Norwegian Skating Association says Fred Anton Maier, who was an Olympic, world, and European speedskating champion in the 1960s, has died. He was 76.
Association president Rune Gerhardsen says Maier died on Tuesday at his home in southern Norway. The cause of death was not given.
Maier won the 5,000 meters at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics plus three other Olympic medals: 10,000 silver, 5,000 bronze in the 1964 Innsbruck Games, and 10,000 silver in 1968, and became world and European champion in 1968. He also set 11 world records.
Gerhardsen on Wednesday called Maier ''one of the greatest and most important profiles in Norwegian skating,'' adding the ice rink in Tonsberg, near his home, was renamed after him last month.
